Karine Knopf's Introduction

My name is Karine Knopf.  I grew up in Edgemoor, S.C., which is a rural town in the upper part of the state.  I was very fortunate to experience a happy childhood with my sister Caroline.  Many of our days were divided between playing in the woods, climbing trees, reading and building underground fairy gardens.  As a minister's daughter, I also spent a considerable amount of time attending church events!  I currently live in Charleston, S.C. with my beautiful cat, Shadow.  I enjoy reading historical fiction, collecting vintage children's fairy tale books and attending music festivals.

After graduating from the College of Charleston with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education, I spent the next six years working in the retail industry in the exciting cities of Boston, MA and Asheville, N.C.  I am currently employed at the Charleston County Public Library as a Library Assistant IV in Children's Services.  While unpacking my belongings on my first day at this job, I came across a fairy tale book that my grandparents had given me long ago.  Taped to the last page was a pocket with a due date card that I had made as a child when playing library!

Twenty-seven years later, I had finally returned to my very first career choice!  Working at a library has proven to be an invaluable experience and has cemented my conviction that I have found my calling in life as well as a wonderful career.  Once I earn my LIS degree, my career goal is to work as either a Children's Services Librarian or as a Youth Services Librarian in a public library.

During my studies for this class, I am looking forward to gaining a solid foundation of knowledge regarding the many facets of the library profession.  I wish to learn the skills that I will need in order to become the best library professional and advocate possible.  Similar to someone who is nearsighted putting on glasses for the first time, I believe that this learning experience will enable me to see the world of the library profession in an entirely new way.
